ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Lockie Ferguson of New Zealand Ruled Out, Replacement Named

Lockie Ferguson made his ODI debut in 2016. New Zealand has been dealt a significant blow ahead of their first match in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, with their star speedster Lockie Ferguson ruled out of the tournament due to a foot injury. His absence follows closely after Ben Sears was sidelined with a hamstring issue.

Placed in Group A, New Zealand is set to face Pakistan in the opening match of the tournament on Wednesday, February 19, at the National Stadium in Karachi.

The Kiwis head into the tournament in strong form, having recently defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final of the Pakistan ODI Tri-series to claim the trophy.

Kyle Jamieson to Replace Injured Lockie Ferguson in New Zealand’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Squad

On Tuesday, 18 February, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced that Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a foot injury. The fast bowler had experienced pain in his right foot following a spell during their warm-up match against Afghanistan.

A statement from NZC confirmed, “BLACKCAPS fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 with a foot injury.”

The statement continued, “Ferguson felt pain in his right foot after bowling in the informal warm-up match against Afghanistan in Karachi on Sunday. An initial medical assessment revealed that he would not be fit to participate in the tournament.”

The statement also confirmed that Kyle Jamieson will replace Ferguson in the squad for the tournament. “Canterbury Kings fast bowler Kyle Jamieson will replace Ferguson and will depart for Pakistan this evening.”

Jamieson, who has represented New Zealand in 45 international matches, has taken 104 wickets across formats. His Test cricket record is especially strong, with 80 wickets in 19 matches at an average of just 19.

After being sidelined for 10 months due to a back injury, Jamieson made his return to domestic cricket with the Canterbury Kings in the Dream11 Super Smash in December.
