England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to field first, a decision that didn’t go as planned as India dominated with the bat, finishing Day 1 at 359/3.
Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul laid a solid foundation with a 91-run partnership for the first wicket. Rahul contributed 42 runs before being dismissed, while Jaiswal impressed with a brilliant century, scoring 101 off 159 balls. Skipper Shubman Gill followed up with another outstanding century and stayed unbeaten on 127 from 175 deliveries.
Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who came in at number five, provided strong support to Gill. The left-hander played an aggressive innings, remaining unbeaten on 65, which included six fours and two sixes.

Rishabh Pant etched his name in the record books on Day 1 of the opening Test between England and India by surpassing Rohit Sharma’s tally for the most sixes by an Indian batter in ICC World Test Championship (WTC) history. With two sixes in the innings, Pant now has a total of 58 sixes in 35 WTC Tests.
In comparison, Rohit Sharma struck 56 sixes in 40 WTC matches spread across three editions before announcing his retirement from Test cricket last month.
