Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as the new head coach of the SA20 franchise Pretoria Capitals, replacing Jonathan Trott, who recently stepped down. This marks Sourav Ganguly first-ever role as head coach of a professional cricket team.
The Capitals endured a disappointing campaign last season under Rilee Rossouw’s leadership, managing only two wins from 10 matches, with six defeats and two no-results. They finished fifth on the points table with 14 points.
Interestingly, the franchise also secured the fifth spot in the 2024 season, missing out on the playoffs. However, in their debut season in 2023, the Capitals impressed by reaching the final, where they ended as runners-up to Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Sourav Ganguly has been serving as the Director of Cricket at JSW Sports since last year.

Now, Sourav Ganguly is set to step into a coaching role for the first time. Between 2015 and 2019, he was president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, before joining Delhi Capitals as mentor during IPL 2019. He later held one of the most influential administrative roles in world cricket, serving as BCCI president from 2019 to 2022.
His immediate task will be the SA20 2025-26 player auction on September 9, where Pretoria Capitals aim to strengthen their squad.
The SA20 2025-26 season will run from December 26, 2025, to January 25, 2026. Unlike previous editions usually held in January-February, this season starts earlier to avoid clashing with the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in February.
