During India’s practice session in Dubai, a young fan kept calling out Sanju Samson’s name — here’s how he responded.
Sanju Samson’s Spot in Asia Cup 2025 Under Threat Despite Strong Form
Sanju Samson’s career has largely been defined by inconsistent opportunities in the playing XI, but the arrival of head coach Gautam Gambhir changed his fortunes. The 30-year-old Kerala batter has been a regular in India’s T20I squad since last year’s World Cup and has made the most of his chances, scoring three centuries. However, his recent form may not guarantee a place in the Asia Cup 2025 playing XI.
Shubman Gill is back in the squad and is expected to open alongside Abhishek Sharma, which puts Samson in direct competition for a spot. He may be pipped by Jitesh Sharma, who brings more experience in the lower order and as a finisher. Jitesh earned his place thanks to a strong IPL season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Despite the competition, Samson remains in high spirits during India’s training sessions. On Saturday, during India’s second practice session at the ICC Academy in Dubai, fans chanted the players’ names as they arrived. When a young fan called out for a selfie or autograph, Samson, in a hurry, promised, “Aata hu beta baad me (I will come later).”

India to begin campaign on September 10
The highly anticipated clash between India and Pakistan is scheduled for September 14 in Dubai. Ahead of the tournament, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar expressed his support for Sanju Samson, stating that the wicketkeeper-batter should feature in the playing XI.
Gavaskar suggested that Samson should get the nod ahead of Jitesh Sharma for the first couple of matches, with final decisions based on performance and form.
