Mohammad Nabi Lights Up Asia Cup with Five Consecutive Sixes

Former Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi produced a stunning display on Thursday to turn the tide in Asia Cup 2025. In a do-or-die Group B clash against Sri Lanka at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, Nabi hammered five consecutive sixes in the final over, finishing with a 22-ball 60 that included three fours and six sixes. His heroics propelled Afghanistan from 120 for seven in the 18th over to 169 for eight by the close.

At one stage, Afghanistan looked set to struggle past 120, but Mohammad Nabi took charge. After hitting three boundaries off pacer Dushmantha Chameera in the penultimate over, he demolished left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage in the last, scoring 32 runs off the over and single-handedly shifting momentum.

With Sri Lanka’s captain Charith Asalanka having exhausted his pace options, Wellalage, a spinner, was brought in for the final over. Nabi seized the opportunity, clearing the long-off and deep mid-wicket boundaries with successive sixes, including one against a 101.5 kmph delivery, showcasing his mastery against spin under high-pressure conditions.

Nabi Shines but Misses Out on T20 Sixes Record

Following a no-ball on the next delivery, which kept Nabi quiet, the senior player reached his fifty on the subsequent legal ball by smashing an outside-off delivery over long-off. He then hit six more on the very next ball, prompting a brief exchange between the bowler and captain.

However, Nabi fell short of equalling Yuvraj Singh’s 2007 T20 World Cup record of six consecutive sixes in an over, managing only a single before getting run out.

Earlier, Afghanistan—traditionally not strong in chasing—opted to bat first after winning the toss against Sri Lanka. The team lost three wickets inside the powerplay, with the batters struggling against Nuwan Thusara’s moving deliveries. Thusara finished with impressive figures of 4 for 18.
