Tilak Varma has been a standout performer for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025, having delivered two match-winning half-centuries this season. MI are set to take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 41st match of the ongoing IPL, scheduled for Wednesday, April 23, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Ahead of this key fixture, Tilak Varma has expressed a personal aspiration for the remainder of the tournament.
The young left-hander has showcased exceptional form this season. Despite facing early criticism—being controversially retired out during a game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for a slow strike rate—Varma bounced back in style. He responded with back-to-back explosive fifties in the following matches, firmly establishing himself as one of MI’s most reliable batters. Currently, he stands as the second-highest run-scorer for the team in IPL 2025.
Tilak Varma Shares His Heartfelt Wish for MI in IPL 2025
During a candid chat on the “Gen Bold” show on JioHotstar, Tilak Varma opened up about his biggest wish for the ongoing IPL 2025 season he wants to finally lift the trophy with Mumbai Indians. Having joined the franchise in 2022, Varma hasn’t experienced championship glory yet, as MI last clinched the title in 2020.
“I always tell Rohit bhai and Surya bhai that I haven’t felt that winning moment yet. I came into the team in 2022, but we haven’t won since. Personally, the last three seasons have gone well for me, but as a team, the results haven’t been in our favor. This year, though, we’re fully charged and ready to give everything—heart and soul,” said the 22-year-old batter.
Varma became part of the MI squad under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, at a time when Hardik Pandya was not with the team. However, Pandya returned in 2024 and took over the reins as MI captain. Speaking about his bond with the current skipper, Varma expressed great admiration.
“I share a strong bond with Hardik bhai. I made my T20 debut under him and received my cap from him, which was a special moment for me. We played together last year too. He always supports the players and is open with his communication, especially when something goes wrong. Our understanding is solid both on and off the field, and I’m hopeful we’ll keep doing well this season,” said Varma, who has featured in 46 matches for the franchise so far.
As for his individual performance, Varma has been in excellent form in IPL 2025, scoring 231 runs from eight games. After Suryakumar Yadav, he is the second-highest run-scorer for MI this season, with two half-centuries to his name. His recent scores of 21*, 59, and 56 underline his consistency.
Mumbai Indians’ season has been a tale of two halves. After a shaky start where they lost four out of their first five matches, the five-time champions bounced back with three consecutive wins. Heading into their next clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad, MI will aim to secure their fifth win of the season—especially after already defeating SRH by four wickets earlier in the tournament.
