According to The Times of India, the all-rounder sustained the injury on Tuesday (September 30) during a training session at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where the series opener is scheduled to begin on October 2.
Although Washington Sundar bowled extensively in the nets, he later felt discomfort in his finger and requested additional taping from the medical staff. As a precaution, he opted out of the fielding drills.
Indian skipper Shubman Gill was seen speaking with Washington Sundar to assess the seriousness of the injury, while teammates Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, and Nitish Reddy also joined the conversation.
Washington Sundar delivered a stellar performance in India’s previous Test series against England.
Over the four matches, he scored 284 runs at an average of 47.33 and picked up seven wickets. His standout moment came in the fourth Test at Manchester, where he scored a crucial century to help India secure a draw.
If Washington Sundar misses the first Test against the West Indies, it could be a significant setback for India. Alongside him, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja are the other spin-bowling all-rounders in the squad. InWashington Sundar absence, Nitish Kumar Reddy could be drafted into the playing XI alongside Patel and Jadeja.
India and the West Indies will face off in a two-Test series, with the second match scheduled from October 10 to 14 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. This series marks the second outing for both teams in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27.
In their last series, India drew 2-2 against England, while the West Indies suffered a 3-0 whitewash against Australia in June-July.
