ICC Penalizes Pakistan for Slow Over Rate vs New Zealand

New Zealand triumphed over Pakistan by 60 runs in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Hosting an ICC tournament for the first time in 29 years, Pakistan endured a dismal start, losing to New Zealand by 60 runs in Karachi.

Bowling first, Pakistan appeared ineffective against Tom Latham and Will Young, who both struck centuries to help the Kiwis amass a daunting total of 320 runs.

In reply, the Pakistani batsmen lacked intent, managing only 22 runs in the batting powerplay. Babar Azam, a key player, faced criticism for his cautious approach, scoring 64 runs off 90 balls.

Adding to Pakistan’s woes, Fakhar Zaman suffered a back injury, ruling him out of the tournament. He will be replaced by seasoned opener Imam-Ul-Haq.

ICC Penalizes Pakistan for Slow Over Rate vs New Zealand

Pakistan has been fined for a slow over-rate in their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener against New Zealand, after falling one over short of the target, even with time allowances taken into account. Each player has been fined five percent of their match fee.

Captain Mohammad Rizwan admitted to the offense, so no formal hearing was needed.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are penalized five percent of their match fee for every over their team fails to bowl within the designated time.

Pakistan will now head to Dubai to face arch-rivals India on February 23. They will conclude their group-stage campaign against Bangladesh on February 27 in Rawalpindi.

A loss to India would likely end Pakistan’s chances of progressing in the tournament.
