“I hope you lose…” – Marco Jansen reveals Ricky Ponting’s shocking message before the ICC WTC 2023-25 Final following IPL 2025 stint with PBKS

Marco Jansen played under head coach Ricky Ponting for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025. South African all-rounder Marco Jansen is part of the Proteas squad for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final. The title clash will be held between South Africa and Australia at Lord’s in London, starting June 11.

South Africa have begun their preparations for the final. They are currently playing a warm-up Test match against Zimbabwe in England to gear up for the crucial game against Australia.

Jansen recently enjoyed a successful IPL 2025 season with the Punjab Kings (PBKS). He claimed 16 wickets in 14 matches, finishing as the team’s second-highest wicket-taker. The left-arm pacer recorded a bowling average of 27.12 and an economy rate of 9.20.

Ricky Ponting, who took over as head coach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) ahead of IPL 2025, did an excellent job, guiding the team to a runner-up finish in the tournament. As Marco Jansen left the franchise to prepare for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final, he shared a humorous message Ponting gave him before his departure.

“Before I left (India), he (Ponting) just said, ‘Good luck, I hope you do well, but I hope you lose,’” Jansen told ICC Digital with a smile.

Marco Jansen: During his time in IPL 2025, Jansen also gained valuable insights from the Australian legend. The 25-year-old spoke highly of Ponting’s positive mindset and how it helped him mentally during the competition.

“I learnt a lot from him, especially from a mental point of view. He’s always positive and focuses on the good rather than the bad. I think that’s what makes him a legend of the game — he always looks at what could go right instead of what might go wrong,” Jansen said.

“Personally, he really helped me in the IPL. He constantly reminded us of our potential — what we can achieve and what could happen — rather than focusing on limitations,” he added.

However, Marco Jansen couldn’t feature in the playoffs for PBKS, as he had to return to South Africa to prepare for the WTC final. All South African players in the squad were instructed to return home by May 26 for national duty.

Interestingly, IPL 2025 was originally scheduled to end on May 25, but due to border tensions between India and Pakistan, the tournament was paused for about a week and eventually extended to June 3.
