Gray-Nicolls is a prominent English cricket equipment and apparel brand, operating as a subsidiary of Grays International. The company was established through the merger of two brands, Grays and Nicolls, and is located in Robertsbridge, East Sussex. Gray-Nicolls produces and markets a diverse array of cricket products, including bats, batting gloves, balls, pads, athletic footwear, team uniforms, and bags.
History
The Gray company was established in 1855 by H.J. Gray under the name H.J. Gray and Sons. It began producing cricket bats for prominent Cambridge University players, including Ranjitsinhji and the then Prince of Wales, while remaining a family-run business. In 1876, L.J. Nicolls entered the cricket bat manufacturing industry.
In the early 1940s, these two manufacturers merged to create Gray-Nicolls. Following World War II, renowned cricket stars like England captain Wally Hammond and Australian all-rounder Keith Miller began using Gray-Nicolls bats.
In 1974, the company launched the ‘scoop’ bat, often regarded as one of cricket’s most iconic bats.
