Ajinkya Rahane Picks Underrated Indian Cricketer, Praises His Growth Ahead of Asia Cup 2025

Ajinkya Rahane praised Axar Patel, highlighting the significant progress he has made as a player in recent years.

The veteran Indian batter described Axar as an underrated member of the Indian team and commended his consistent contributions. The all-rounder has been included in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.

Earlier this year, Axar served as India’s vice-captain during the T20I series against England. However, with Shubman Gill’s return to the T20I setup for the Asia Cup, Axar’s vice-captaincy responsibilities were handed over.

Despite the change in leadership role, Axar has firmly established himself as a dependable all-rounder for India in both ODIs and T20Is. He played an instrumental part in India’s triumphs at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, contributing significantly with both bat and ball.

Ajinkya Rahane on Axar Patel: “I believe he is a highly underrated player.”

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ajinkya Rahane praised Axar Patel, calling him one of the most underrated players in Indian cricket. He highlighted Axar’s progress in recent years, noting his all-round contributions.

“I feel he is a highly underrated player. Over the last two to three years, he has grown immensely as a cricketer. Whenever he has got an opportunity—whether as a batter or as a bowler—he has delivered for the team. He can bowl with the new ball in the powerplay, control the middle overs, and even bowl at the death if required,” Rahane said.

Rahane further emphasized Axar’s importance in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, particularly on spin-friendly surfaces in the UAE.

“As a captain, you always feel secure when you have someone like Axar Patel in your squad. His fielding adds another dimension to his game. And since the Asia Cup will be played in Dubai, where pitches are likely to favor spinners, his skills and experience will be a big asset for the team,” he added.

The Asia Cup 2025 begins on September 9 in the UAE. India have been drawn in Group A with Pakistan, Oman, and the UAE, and will kick off their campaign against the hosts on September 10 in Dubai.

Suryakumar Yadav will captain the defending champions, with eight teams competing for the trophy. The final is scheduled for September 28.
