Abhishek Sharma’s Century Hopes Dashed by Heartbreaking Run-Out

India opener Abhishek Sharma came agonizingly close to becoming the third batter in history, and the second Indian, to score a century in a men’s T20I during the Asia Cup. However, his bid ended in heartbreak on Wednesday at the Dubai International Stadium during India’s second Super Four game, as he was run out for 75 off 37, despite retaining his ICC No.1 T20I batting ranking.

The dismissal came on the first ball of the 12th over when India captain Suryakumar Yadav cut a short, wide delivery from Mustafizur Rahman towards backward point. Sensing a quick single, Abhishek immediately set off, only to be stunned by an outstanding fielding effort from Rishad Hossain, who dived left, stopped the ball, and fired it back to the bowler near the non-striker’s end.

Suryakumar tried to send Abhishek back, but he was past the halfway mark. Mustafizur calmly collected the ball and dislodged the bails. Despite a diving effort, Abhishek couldn’t make it in time, leaving him on the ground in disappointment while his sister Komal and mother looked on crestfallen from the stands.

Gavaskar Criticises Abhishek Sharma’s Risky Attempt Despite Stellar Start

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar, commentating at the time of the dismissal, criticised Abhishek Sharma for a needless run attempt. “There was absolutely no need for that run. He thought there was a single there, but there was nothing in it,” he said.

Abhishek had given India another strong start in the tournament, sharing a fiery 77-run opening stand with vice-captain Shubman Gill. Their partnership powered India’s best performance in the powerplay so far in the Asia Cup, scoring 72 runs. Although Rishad removed Gill on the second ball after the powerplay, he went on to complete his fifty in just 25 balls, becoming the second Indian batter to score consecutive fifty-plus knocks in men’s T20 Asia Cup.

Earlier, India were put in to bat after Bangladesh won the toss. The defending champions, who defeated Pakistan in their opening Super Four game on Sunday, aim to secure their place in the final with a win against Bangladesh.
