MS Dhoni Graces Madurai for Velammal Cricket Stadium Inauguration
Madurai was abuzz with MS Dhoni fever on Thursday as thousands of fans flocked to the airport to catch a glimpse of the former India captain. Dhoni arrived in the Tamil Nadu city to inaugurate the new international-standard Velammal Cricket Stadium, developed by the Velammal Educational Trust in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).
In a viral video on social media, hundreds of fans could be seen chanting “Dhoni, Dhoni” as the former Chennai Super Kings captain touched down, dressed in a casual black t-shirt and his signature sunglasses. Dhoni acknowledged the crowd with a wave, showing appreciation for their unwavering support.
The Velammal Cricket Stadium, reportedly built at a cost of around ₹325 crore, spans 11.5 acres and currently accommodates 7,300 spectators, with plans to expand to 20,000 in the coming years. The venue features a Centre of Excellence, dedicated practice nets, modern floodlights, and advanced drainage systems, making it suitable to host TNPL, Ranji Trophy, and IPL matches. Once fully operational, it will become Tamil Nadu’s second-largest cricket venue after the iconic Chepauk Stadium.
