The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has decided to rename Ramakrishnapuram Pratham Street in West Mambalam after veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. This street is located in the same area where Ashwin lives. The proposal, submitted by Carrom Ball Event and Marketing Pvt Ltd, was unanimously approved at the GCC’s Budget 2025 Council meeting, which was chaired by Mayor R. Priya.
Dilip Sardesai
South Mumbai has paid tribute to Dilip Sardesai, one of India’s best cricketers, by naming an intersection after him. South Mumbai politician Milind Deora paid tribute to the great batsman by inaugurating the Dilip Sardesai Chowk. The landmark is located near the Colaba Telephone Building, near the Farias Hotel in the South Mumbai area. Dilip has played 30 Test matches for India.
Sunil Gavaskar
Former Indian captain and the first to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket, the great Sunil Gavaskar also has many places named after him. A road in Kasargod, Kerala has been named after Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. The decision was taken at a city council meeting, where the naming ceremony was held in the presence of Gavaskar. Gavaskar also has a ground in the USA and a road in Wellington, New Zealand named after him.
Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar’s historic ODI double century at Gwalior’s Captain Roop Singh Stadium not only etched his name in the pages of history, but also in the city. After his unbeaten 200 against South Africa at the Roop Singh Stadium, the Madhya Pradesh government decided to honour the legendary batsman by naming the City Centre-Huraoli Road after him.
The announcement was made by then Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, which was confirmed by Gwalior Collector Akash Tripathi. Besides, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is also the president of the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association, announced that a pavilion in the stadium will be named after Tendulkar.
Anil Kumble
There is a circle in the Garden City of Bangalore named after former Indian cricketer and legendary spinner Anil Kumble. This is a major junction between St. Mark’s Road and MG Road in Bangalore, from where the road to Chinnaswamy Stadium also goes. Earlier this circle was named Oriental Circle, which was later announced by the state government to be named Anil Kumble Circle as a tribute to the player for his important contribution to the game.
